The 12AU7 in a Valvecaster offers a way to introduce tube warmth and dynamics, but with a more subtle and controlled effect than higher-gain tubes.

NOS electro-harmonix 12au7/ECC82

Lower gain type of drive, and it can take up to 15VDC for even more volume and headroom.
